"Even when I’m missing the mark, I keep on nailing it
When I said I love you a lot, I meant a little bit
Slap me a little “hands up,” because I’m killing it
I think I’m killing it
I'm really killing it"

GENERAL

NAME: Eileen Hae-Joo Coffin
NICKNAMES: None that have stuck, but she's not against them.
AGE/DOB: 17 ; June 20th
BLOOD STATUS: Half-blood
GENDER/PRONOUNS: Female ; she/her/hers
SEXUALITY: Hot People (aka all of Gooseberry)
HOMETOWN: Los Gatos, California, in the mountains (but she definitely acts more like a townie)

CONCEPT: Transfiguration whiz dreams of teaching, plays at rebellion.

PHYSICAL

APPEARANCE: Eileen's look suggests that she has a strange mix of caring and not caring about her appearance. Though not above a ponytail, her hair is generally fairly nicely done and appears to be well cared for. She wears make-up, but not heavily, and always has a spritz of perfume wafting about her, leaving her to smell like the faintest hint of cigarettes and lilac. Though generally not one to wear much jewelry, her pieces tend to be delicate and tasteful.

Her biggest problem is clothing. Eileen has mostly high-end items, but she doesn't always take great care of them. There are a lot of rumpled shirts and skirts with wonky pleats; things that have clearly be thrown into drawers or left lying out. Unfortunately for her, this is also very much how she treats her uniform, so it's often a rumpled mess, and it's not uncommon for her to forget her crosstie or leave something unbuttoned, or, during the summer, roll up her skirt to make it shorter because it's hot. Part of this unconcerned attitude is a rejection of having a uniform of all. Most of this is laziness.

HEIGHT: A respectable 5'5"

PB: Go Ara

PERSONALITY

LIKES: Transfiguration. Food. Cigarettes. Speaking Korean. Teaching. The west coast. Cold bodies of water. Lattes. Being out on the water. Avocados. Whiskey. Skipping rocks.

DISLIKES: Dress codes. People taking things too seriously (she's missing that Coppertale competitive streak). Vodka. Sharing personal details. Vegetarianism (She tried, Sandy). Rocks with "good energy."

PERSONALITY:

Eileen is a playful if somewhat mischievous young woman who enjoys poking and prodding her classmates, oftentimes past the point of endearing and into the realm of annoying. Though not malicious and just generally trying to amuse herself, she can be dismissive of other's feelings and reckless with her words. After the fact she may feel guilty, but she's generally resistant to apologizing and is incredibly stubborn about this and, honestly, most other things. This dismissiveness wasn't always as pronounced of a trait, even if it was always there, but recent familial upheaval has left Eileen more rebellious and searching for space from her classmates. Disregarding the feelings of others is a useful tool in her quest to keep most at arm's length, even her friends.

Some things haven't changed, though - Eileen tries, and has always tried, to cultivate an air of someone who's relatively carefree. She can often be irreverent, doesn't always care for her things or herself (hello cigarettes), and is always on the lookout for fun, even if it's a little against the rules. She also tries to appear uncomplicated - what you see is what you get. Nowadays part of this might be because she's trying to convince herself that she's less complicated than she actually is, but regardless the result is the same. Eileen wants you to know that she's an open book! She tells you when she's mad, when she's sad, when she's frustrated! Her emotional armor is strong and relatively resilient, so she claims to mostly not be concerned about what others think of her! Her goals are straightforward and simple - she wants to be a hit witch, following in her father's footsteps, because that seems cool, right? Then she can put people in coffins. Get it?? She exudes confidence, and while much of it is genuine, some of it is just hot air.

In the end, Eileen is mostly true to this idea of being open, especially with her feelings. There are things, though, that she finds too personal to share, most of which revolve around her circumstances in life and her aspirations. Some of these personal details many others would agree are things that are understandably held close, like the fact that her father cheated on her mother, and now their marriage is in trouble and her father quit his job. Other things, like her goal of becoming a teacher, are more just Eileen wanting something private, regardless of how inconsequential telling others would be.

Because of this, she's often flippant about things that verge on being personal to her, and questions about her and her life are often deflected with the wave of a hand. Or, another favorite way to respond - she simply lies. Did you know her dad was forced to quit because he was just too good at his job? These more outrageous lies are always said with a little twinkle in her eye. Is she daring you to believe it? Or to call her out?

As someone who tries to keep herself from getting too close to others, it's not horribly surprising that she's incredibly gun shy about dating. This wasn't always the case, as she dated throughout her Sophomore year, but with her new attitude about sharing a lot about herself and her breakdown of faith in relationships has made her hesitant. Even so, she's got a bit of a reputation from her time at Hogwarts as someone who's only interested in people who are already spoken for. Eileen makes jokes about this if it ever comes up, and doesn't act like she's against dating or intimacy. In practice, though, she ends up being something of a tease - she'll almost kiss people, will act like she's interested only to run off, and will often given the impression of being interested before completely writing someone off.

Though Eileen may be resistant to opening up to others, this doesn't mean that she rejects others opening up to her. Even if she's not great and handling this. Loyal and protective on some level, Eileen tries very hard to be a good, empathetic friend, but often simplifies problems. Quick to present potential solutions, they're almost always shortcuts or bandaids. Social issues especially are not Eileen's forte, and while she'll try to help, she might actually just make it worse accidentally. Oops?

Eileen lacks a strong need to do things for the greater good or for people she's not close with when it's not something significant. It might be nice if she offered to help clean out the boats for boating club, or carry that stuff for that random struggling freshman... in the grand scheme of things, though, it seems like a lot of work for little reward (and she's a little bit lazy). Because of this, she avoids taking on extra responsibilities unless they 1) very specifically related to one of her goals or 2) she's directly asked to help (and she probably won't be pleased about that case). Despite being a TA and loving it, good luck getting her to tutor you in anything besides Transfiguration or Animagus Studies.

Still, teaching and learning bring out a different side of Eileen, and she's almost a different person in class - though her uniform is often a mess, she takes learning very seriously, especially when it comes to Transfiguration, and will be engaged and focused in every lecture regardless of subject.

SKILLS

LANGUAGES SPOKEN: Fluent in English and Korean, and speaks both at home.

PATRONUS: Mountain lion, not successfully cast.
SKILLS:
[Academics] - Eileen is incredibly smart and applies herself in class. She loves to learn in general, so she'll often read ahead or take the time to really understand a concept if she finds it interesting enough. Transfiguration is where Eileen really shines; her skills in this area are exceptional, and she obviously takes pride in that. She would just spend all of her time studying transfig if someone let her.
[Smoke Rings] - The dumbest skill, but she will show you at parties every chance she gets if she has even a single drink in her.
[Quidditch] - Eileen was actually Keeper for the Coppertale team her sophomore year, but she quit Quidditch when she left for Hogwarts and claims she hasn't looked back. She's pretty rusty, but she was good when she did play.
[Boating & Swimming] - Skilled with small sailboats, Eileen can manage even slightly larger, non-automated sailboats alone and prefers sailing to other forms of boating. Still, all boats are home to her - motorboats are trivial, and she's a very solid rower. Unsurprisingly, she's also a strong swimmer.
[Anti-skill - Cooking] - She will burn everything you give to her, even if the task doesn't involve heating anything. It's a nightmare.

HISTORY

FAMILY MEMBERS:

Owen Coffin
Father | Retired Hit Wizard
A surprisingly sensitive man, capable of completely separating out his feelings from his previous job's work. Owen loves his wife deeply, but despite that engaged in a six month long affair with his partner. Though he admitted this to his wife after finally breaking it off, it has virtually destroyed their marriage. Owen quit his job and is doing his best to mend their relationship. His relationship with Eileen is difficult - she loves her father, but she can't really reconcile his actions with the person she thought he was. Despite this, she's not unforgiving towards him.

Hei-Ran "Hannah" Coffin
Mother | Wedding planner for the (wizarding) rich and famous
Hannah is generally a kind but no-nonsense woman, who built her wedding planning empire from the ground up. Obviously, she's highly motivated and has an eye for the visually pleasing. Despite all her good qualities, the betrayal of her husband has left Hannah scrambling to take control in unkind ways, including trying to win over her children (especially Eileen) so they're on "her side." She's trying to fix her marriage, but is having a hard time letting go of Owen's transgressions and often lashes out. She and Eileen had a fine relationship before, but now it's strained and Eileen simply tries to avoid her when she's home. It doesn't really work.

Gillian Coffin
Older Sister (19) | Auror-in-training
Incredibly similar to Owen, Gillian also has an uncanny ability to be sensitive in general but focused and emotionally hard in her profession. She's hard-working and very intelligent, and is doing her best to support both of her parents. Still, her mother wrongly assumes that Gillian is on Owen's side because they're so similar. Gillian and Eileen get along well, even if Gillian spends a lot of time trying to convince her younger sister to take better care of herself.

Aubrey Coffin
Younger Sister (10) | Student at Port Prep
Aubrey has a bit of a chip on her shoulder because it's already apparent that she's not as intelligent as her sisters. She's come out of this familial drama even more spoiled than before, as she'll happily take bribery from Hannah. Eileen feels very separate from Aubrey and the two never particularly bonded, due in part to their age gap and their different temperaments.

HISTORY:

Eileen grew up in the Santa Cruz Mountains in a large, private home in Los Gatos, California, the second daughter of a well-to-do, self-made family. Both Hannah and Owen were very loving all through her early years, and were very harmonious - they rarely fought, they treated each other as equals, and there was clearly a lot of love between them. Eileen's childhood was filled with lots of family activities, as her parents' fairytale marriage and love for their children resulted in a close-knit family. They often spent weekends sailing together, ate dinner together every night, and went on family vacations every summer.

Eileen's parents were also both highly motivated in their respective fields, and thus expected a lot of Eileen and her sisters. Though Eileen didn't make great efforts to live up to her parents' expectations, her natural intelligence and motivation to do well in school were mostly enough, even if she fell behind some in the social sphere due to her rambunctiousness. Though she spent Kindergarten at a local school, 1st grade saw Eileen attending Port Prep in Los Angeles via the Floo Network. It took her a little bit to settle in socially, but Eileen excelled in classes and eventually was at least mostly well-behaved, even if she did occasionally get up to no good for the sake of fun. She remained at Port Prep until she transferred her freshman year to Gooseberry, following a batch of her classmates to what her parents saw as a unique, high quality learning experience.

Things seemed fine and, honestly, easy. Eileen found Gooseberry stimulating and fun, she took up Quidditch to get out some of her excess energy (and made it onto Coppertale's team as Keeper her sophomore year), and generally enjoyed her time with friends old and new. She even started dating a boy in her year, Sandford Owsley, despite their drastically different personalities. Though still a bit rough around the edges sometimes, she felt at home at Gooseberry and tried her best to get along with others.

Eileen's parents were glad she was fitting in (and, honestly, mellowing out), but an upheaval in their perfect marriage was about upset Eileen's life in a serious way. At the beginning of her sophomore year, Owen revealed to Hannah that he had had an affair with his partner which had since ended. Even though it was already over, that didn't lessen the feeling of betrayal any, especially because their marriage had seemed so sound. They decided to keep Owen's infidelity between themselves, so as to not upset their daughters. Even so, Hannah began trying to win over her children, and began pulling away from Owen, though all of this was subtle enough that the girls didn't suspect.

Keeping the affair a secret worked for a time, but when everyone was home for Christmas the holiday stress was too much, and the truth came spilling out. Eileen took the news incredibly hard - she'd always looked at her parents' relationship as a point of stability. Along with this, the exposure of Owen's infidelity gave Hannah what she felt was more free reign to truly campaign for her children to be on her side (even though there really was no need to take sides). Even with promises to try to work on their marriage; the damage was done. Eileen returned from Christmas break disoriented, upset, and ready to act out.

Embarrassed that the family she had bragged about being so perfect suddenly wasn't, and scared about what her parents' issues meant for relationships in the grand scheme of things, the sophomore became more closed off and more moody. She lashed out, pushed people away, and eventually broke up with Sandy despite not actually finding any real faults in their relationship. In some sort of attempt to push her ex away, she immediately began a tumultuous relationship with another student. Though her grades never quite slipped and her Quidditch play was only slightly disrupted, Eileen's social situation took a drastic nosedive. Ready to get away from it all and wanting even more distance from her parents, Eileen decided to go to Hogwarts the next year to get some desperately needed space.

Sorted into Ravenclaw due to her sharp mind and love of learning, Eileen found she didn't quite fit into her new house on any other fronts, and the distance from everything didn't quite improve her feelings as much as she thought it would. She spent the year performing well in school but struggling again with interpersonal relationships. Messy feelings and acting out lead to her breaking up one couple (though she didn't go on to date anyone), and rumors began to circulate that she had broken up another couple or two as well. Eileen didn't bother denying the false claims, and simply tried to finish up the year as best she could.

Her return to Gooseberry, then, was something of a relief, even if some rumors about only being interested in people already in relationships had followed her home. She was at least back in the comfort of a house she felt more in tune with, and among people she'd grown up with... even if she'd pushed them away fairly aggressively when she had left. Eileen's way of dealing with this was to simply pretend that nothing out of the ordinary happened. She definitely did not get super moody, break up abruptly with Sandy for no clear reason, and fall relatively out of contact while abroad!

That's how she's spent this year, trying to settle back in as though nothing has changed. Even though she clearly has, and the school has too. The supernatural events of last year and this year prove to be of no real concern to Eileen, though - she finds them inconvenient, to be sure, but she's got goals in mind and a lot of willful ignorance. Life is complicated enough without adding spooky shit into it; can't she just pretend like at least school is fine?

SCHOOL

YEAR: Senior
HOUSE: Coppertale
SORTING: Though not competitive, Eileen is forward, confident (though some of that is show), stubborn, and likes to be her own boss. There was a inkling of desire for Ebonhide as she's got a lot of passion in her, especially towards her studies, but not enough to pull her away from the strength of the fox.
WAND: Ebony, solidified Re'em blood, 14.25", slightly springy.
FAMILIAR: A very large, judgmental looking Maine Coon named Florian that's actually a huge attention whore. Love him. Please. He's constantly wandering around trying to find pets. He's also obsessed with Sandford Owsley's rabbit, Mimi, and will often show up at Ribbonfin camp in an attempt to see her. In other news, Eileen wears him like a scarf sometimes.

CLASSES: Transfiguration, Potions, Charms, Outdoor Education, Magical Rudiments, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Wizard Literature.
ADVANCED STUDY: Animagus Studies (Mountain lion). Eileen claims that she wants to be an Animagus so that she can be more effective in her "eventual job" as a hit witch. She really wants to be one because it furthers her understanding of Transfiguration so she's more equipped to teach (and also because it sounds fun).
SENIOR PROJECT: Attempting slight alterations to one's animagus form. Eileen isn't looking for anything dramatic, but maybe a slight shift in eye color, or a sharpening of claws, or a slight lengthening of a tail. She knows it's a tall order, so she has a large trove of research to present on the matter in case no actual results come of her attempts.
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: Incredibly smart, despite having some social issues sometimes. Quick to answer, quick to pick up on things, and generally engaged in class. She loves learning and is very attentive in class, regardless of subject.

EXTRACURRICULARS:
[Transfiguration TA] - Eileen loves this job, and it's completely obvious in her enthusiasm for helping students, grading, and attending lectures. She'll claim it's just because Transfiguration is just so easy for her, but she's got the teaching bug. This is probably the only place where Eileen is always pretty nice and is incredibly patient.
[Boating] - The only thing Eileen loves more than teaching is being out on the water. Please, just let her out there. Please unfreeze, lake.
